Review by Steven Thwaits
Anyway, last night: The rockers were tight and explosive. Highway 61 and It¹s Alright MA were highlights as usual. Among the slower numbers, Til I Fell in Love With You stood out, swampy and menacing. Visions of Johanna was also compelling and hypnotic. Spirit On the Water however, was a mess. All discordant and plunky. Things Have Changed, usually one of my favorites, seemed to have no energy. Tangled Up in Blue also a relative bore compared to the hoedown days of the old band. Sorry, folks, but I need to tell it like I heard it. And I would be happy to never hear Summer Days again. Its been beat to death. Watchtower, however, for me, never loses its scary appeal. Please don¹t get me wrong. Last night was more great than mediocre, but I wish that Bob would change it up. Play half the show acoustic, with only Herron to accompany him. The recently released recordings show that he is often at his strongest, on the slower songs, with spare instrumentation and voice. And stop setting up 20 feet back from the front of the stage. The very best of last night was when Bob stood, center stage (although way back, of course), with just his harp and the mike. Those were the moments that keep me coming back.

He only threw in 2 songs from Modern Times. 'When the Deal Goes Down' and 'Workingman's Blues'. For me they were absolute standout's. A sweet mix of oldies had everyone rocking along once we got our minds around the changed arrangements. Some of the rearrangements worked outstandingly well, some could use a little tweaking, but the constant was the amazing musicianship and tightness of the band, whatever genre of roots music Bob chose to delve into, they were totally at ease with and right on the money.

Bob was wearing his black western suit with red trim. He wore his black Stetson to match. The boys were dressed in their blue suits with black shirts. I find it quite amusing that Bob makes them wear matching outfits. You couldn ’t pay me enough to wear a matching outfit in a rock and roll band!

Review by Steven Thwaits
how can anyone think Bob doesn¹t comment on our world, when this song, and John Brown, are given such searing work-ups? In the first encore position, Bob is saying Militarism Sucks. He says it with rock. Bob is rock. Bob is song. He needs no other language.

Review by Sam

By the end of the electric set, the crowd was dancing madly and the place exuded HAPPINESS (bob makes so many people happy for so many different reasons... that amazes me every time). he came back for 3 encores: lovesick, like a rolling stone (crowd loved it) and it ain't me (with harp again). then bob thanked us all again and said: Now prepare yourselves!!!! for one of the greatest artists of this age or any age, mr. one and only paul simon. so paul came and joined the band for 4 numbers, the sound of silence; i walk the line; blue moon of kentucky (larry playing the fiddle, what a versatile fellow he is, that country boy) and knocking on heaven's door. for the last 3 tunes they were just having fun, but for the sound of silence the feeling in the stadium was really electric. the two men, each with guitars, stood about 5 feet apart, staring at eachother throughout the entire performance so that the audience saw them in profile. the way they tiptoed through the song made everyone hold their breath. maybe they're still getting used to performing together (undoubtably), but they each proceeded so cautiously, respectful of the other's part (bob sang harmony) that it was really fabulous to see. very cool to see two wonderful performers, each of whom put on an amazing show in his own way, stop in the middle and hold his own natural style in check for the sake of a shared performance. the overall delivery of the song was not so successful; it was the energy of the two hugely-concentrating men on the stage that made it work. there was really, actually, SILENCE in the enormous stadium as they sang the last verse, as everybody hung on the respective lips of bob and paul. WOW!

He received standing ovations after every song. The highlights are difficult to choose as the band was on tonight. As an aside, my binocular closeups of Garnier suggested to my trained eye that the band might have gotten its hands on B.C. finest export. Anyone else notice this? The highlights were a sublime Mr. Tambourine Man and my first live performance of Cocaine Blues. Also, please note that Bob spoke to the audience. Besides the "thanks everybody" and introducing the band, before playing Tangled Up In Blue he said "there is a story behind this song, but I'm not going to tell you". Has he ever introduced this song in this way?

Review by

The acoustics in this small bar/club were outstanding. I have never heard a Dylan show sound so good. As expected Cold Irons Bound came up next followed by Make You Feel My Love which was performed with real tenderness. Bob loves to play his new songs. By the way the usual mugging and hamming it up continues. He was smiling and doing the Dylan waddle all night long. He had great energy. Also Bob spoke more than I have heard in years. Not only did he say "thanks everybody" several times, he said it one point to the audience "you're much too kind". What next Bob introducing his songs? No but later on in the set he did what I believe is a Gordon Lightfoot song I'm Not Suppose to Care" (please help me with this one anyone out there who recognized the song) and said after the song "a friend of mine wrote that". In the fifth spot was Silvio, this also got the crowd really excited. A wonderful acoustic set followed - Stone Walls, Baby Blue, and as we come to expect Tangled Up In Blue. The crowd reaction for this one was the probably the loudest.
