REVIEWS

Bob Links

Review by Garry Pappin
Bob was in good voice all night (typically getting stronger as the night went on), and perhaps due in part to the excellent acoustics, the lyrics to all songs were exceptionally clear as were the nuances of his phrasing. Highway 61 especially benefitted from this clarity and stood out as the rock and roll classic that it is. Similarly, Things Have Changed, Desolation Row, Ain't Talkin', and Masters of War have never sounded better and provided many special moments within each song - formed either by powerful words, vocal delivery, or the interplay and synergy of the band (who Bob apparently forgot to introduce).

Review by Wilson Fisk
Well I must say I was slightly dissapointed after the Albany show. And there are many factors for that. One was the heat in that venue, which was ridiculous... Second was the setlist, which was ok, but not what I was hoping for after seeing the setlists so far on this leg of the tour... All in all there were some very good performances at the Albany show that I was very happy I was there to see(When the Deal Goes down, Don't Think Twice, Simple Twist of Fate, All Along thr Watchtower, Hattie Carrol), but it was just a bit "underwhelming"... Also the crowd for the most part was stale, and you could tell they were expecting a "Greatest Hits" show... And basically, I didn't feel Bob's energy was very high nor was he into performing that night(which I expected to be a reality based on what I have read on this site)...

Review by Garry Pappin
Cat's was a strong opener, which I would take over Maggies any day. YAGN was standard. Tweedle - let's pray thats the last time I have to hear that one...4th street was solid - really only a few upsinging instances - the only realy upsinging of the night - grandfunkdylan (Greg) didn't like it, but I thought it was well performed. IBYBT was also standard - I was hoping for something exciting in that slot. The band was cooking on mobile - Denny sounded great. Masters was one of the highlights for sure, great arrangment. Leopard-Skin was great - a nice surprise for sure - interesting place in the set though. And then, out of nowhere comes JOEY! I had thought it was Tough Mama for the first bar or two, but then Denny's solo line came in and I totally lost it...It was incredible, especially for the first time in a few years...What a great surprise - made my 3.5 hour drive worth it. Highway 61 was sub-par due to George's drumming...I don't know what was up with him all night. Sugar Baby was another weakpoint for me. I wasn't familiar with the arrangment first of all, and I didn't like it...Definitely the worst number of the night for me. Summerdays was rocking...I don't mind the tune when I only see a show or two a tour...It was a fun set closer on a nice summer evening. Rolling Stone and Watchtower were standard...The band was really cookin' on both...Lots of pictures were taken. Stay tuned.

Ah, I digress... OK - the set. Maggie's Farm was a nice opener. Set the tone for the eve. Baby Blue - fine. ...Johanna always a great choice, a hit from the past without being "a hit". Girl From The N.C. was the high point for me and my companions. Great acoustic(ish) arrangement. Being 50 something but still basically a rock 'n roll boy, I like the rockin' finishing 3 songs, but would like more rock throughout. So that's it, Bobby boy. Good job - lame finishing jokes aside. The syncophants near me got a chuckle though.

Review by John Burkhart
The accoustic set started with a rousing version of "Stone Walls and Steel Bars". Bob rocked through "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", and moved right into "Tangled Up In Blue" with some of the best harp I've heard him play in years. The crowd rushed the stage after "Tangled" and Bob really started to get into his performance, seemingly drawing energy from the crowd in front of the stage. He concluded his acoustic set with more amazing harp on "My Back Pages", He finished the main part of his show with blazing versions of "Across The Borderline" and "Highway 61". When he left the stage it was obvious that he had been enjoying himself as he bowed and waved to the crowd. Bob came out for his encore and delivered animated versions of "Love Sick", "Rainy Day Women", an acoustic "Blowin In The Wind" (with great harmony vocals from Larry Campbell and Bucky Baxter), a rockin "Till I Fell In Love With You", and closed the night with a heartfelt "Forever Young". As Bob started to leave the stage towards the rear, he turned around and came back up to the front and high-fived three or four outstretched hands. He waved to the crowd again, bowed, and disappeared behind the stage..
