Review by Marina Montesano

Then Bob is on guitar for Lay Lady Lay and back to the keyboards for Things Have Changed, very good version with Donnie on violin. When The Deal Goes Down is a live song that never worked for me that much, but it is followed by a fantastic 'Til I Fell In Love With You: Bob is centre stage with his harp for a good part of the song, that sounds like nothing I've heard before; it could be a new song, which is plain great. Show goes on smooth with Stuck Inside Of Mobile and Sugar Baby but flies high with a very grooving It's Alright, Ma: the fact that Stu has been cleverly moved from Siberia behind Bob's shoulders to fronting him like the rest of the band, works out great in this song, as he adds a lot of rhythm to it. Then we get Hattie Carroll and Tweedle, both in the new versions, followed by Beyond The Horizon: after three nights in a row I'm quite fed up with this song, and so is Bob, who delivers it quite carelessly. Highway 61 cheers thing up a little bit. After that, some notes I do not recognise immediately: and of course I don't, as it is not a Dylan's song, but the English version of Charles Aznavour's Les Bons Moments (The Times We've Known). What a surprise, as to my knowledge he has been playing it just one time back in 1998 (but I could be wrong here) and a fantastic rendition as well. A true magic moment. Tonight fans are allowed to the stage for the three encores, that include a very nicely done Spirit On The Water, with big laughing between Bob and Donnie, and the now usual - but not less appreciated - harp/dance moment at the end. It could be a very good, if not fantastic show, but its highlights and mostly The Times We've Known make it for something unique.

Review by Marina Montesano

Though the audience is applauding and cheering along the whole show, the all-seated situation makes it for a less hot gig - at least this is my point of view. First numbers are a bit blurred by the problems I mentioned, though it is good to have Bob on guitar for I'll Be Your Baby Tonight. Highlights of the show are an eerie John Brown, a very well sung Chimes Of Freedom, a Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum with Bob on harp centre stage, then back behind keyboards for the last part, a rightly applauded Masters Of War, and some of the faster numbers like Honest With Me, Highway 61, Thunder On The Mountain and LARS, because the band jams hard and Dylan appears to be in a very lively mood. We also have Po' Boy again, very good as heard in Saarbrücken, I just wonder why he has decided to cut off the last verse, which is a very funny conclusion: but no big deal, it is a great come back anyway. Blowin' In The Wind, at the end, has him again walking in front of his fans, with his harp and some crazy dancing. A good finale.

Review by  Jacque Graf

Bob appeared with the stratocaster, black suit and white hat for a very convincing "Cat's in the well": "OK we're here to rock, i take my guitar and play" (if you can call it play... it's more like punctuations on the voice, weird chords and small phrases... which i quite appreciated. As long as i was just in front of the man! I suppose that not the quarter of the crowd did see anything, a pity for the audience... but as i already said the place was not appropriate at all). seconded by a regular "It ain¹t Me" followed by a very good "Tom Thumb's" and great "It's Alright" first highlights of the night to my ears.

Review by Woody Alien
What a great show tonight for the first in France of Bob in 2005. Bob was in fine
form with a good voice and the crowd very receptive. The concert started with
“Maggie’s farm” as the intro, especially the rock opening I was waiting for.
The second song “Tonight I’ll be staying here with you” with a nice musical
arrangement (First part of harp of the night, at the center of the stage, yeah Bob !).
Then came the recent “Tweedle dee and tweedle dum” and “Just like
Tom thumb’s blues” with harp. The fifth song, the classic “It’s alright, ma
(I’m only bleeding)” was very well played. I liked the parts of violin and standup
bass. Then the acoustic “Girl of the North country”, I heard the new arrangement
and was very happy to impregnate with it live, reinforced by the pedal steel and
the harp. The band returned to a big rock sound with “High water (For Charley
Patton)”, I appreciated the swing of Bob while he was playing the piano. 45 mns
of true music then Bob announced a break after only 7 songs. During these 10
mns, the security ejected 2 drunk people at the 1 st row, and Bob changed his hat.
And the show continues with a new announcement "to welcome Mr Bob Dylan".

REVIEW

Review by Rene Voncken
This night really rocked. The sound was great, hard and mean. I´m quite a bluesrock fan and I got just what I wanted to hear!!!! This was my 15th Dylan concert and by far the best I´ve been to. Dylan really looked like he was amusing himself, constantly ferreting around on stage, make vague dancing moves like he was either drunk or stoned out of his gourt. He even told the audience (himself, yes Dylan!!!) that he and his band, although they weren´t used to it, were obligated by law to have a break halfway through the concert in France, and that we didn´t have to worry, because they were coming back! He really rocked the roof off, constantly swinging behind his E-Piano, his band was really really great............What a great guitarist that Freddy is!!!! Wowww.... I was with my dad at the concert and he was swinging like hell too.... 19 songs!!!!!!!! It was my first concert in Le Zenith, but that´s the best hall I´ve ever been to; the sound!!!!!!!!.

REVIEW

Review by Michael Farry
Bob seemed in good form, very focused. His phrasing was particularly impressive. The audience was great - my kind of audience - very little noise during the quiet songs, but rocking when necessary. One of the spine tingling moments for me was that wonderful last verse of Hard Rain answering the obvious question: OK so the world's gone wrong what are YOU going to do about it? The quiet arrangement, the absolutely silent audience and Dylan's phrasing and emphasis made it the high point of an excellent concert.

oh but cold iron bounds. first just the guitars, then the drums and at the end of the first stanza that bass line. such power, such force, and larry's guitar. why go see a heavy metal band? rainy day women closed the first set. bob was occasionally smiling, having lits of fun with charlie, he enjoyed it as much as we did. no wonder he tours all the time, the man loves it. at least tonight he did, as much as any teenager playing in his garage.

ironic that the venue, "the zenith", a rather ugly place in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, was at the actual nadir of the tour, paris being at the bottom leg of the tour before returning north to london to finish. and i've wondered if paris or the french had anything to do with any of the other ironies of the evening, the cool response, the conservative set list, the shorter song lengths, the tight clean lines of the show, etc. i don't know, but i can say that it was a night of ironies, contradictions, and extremes, and that is something the french should appreciate. bravo!!!

SETLIST

A  Stolen Moment
Dylan, who is having genuine trouble tuning his guitar in the first half, receives an unusual crowd response - hostility during the acoustic set. According to one report in Pop magazine, Dylan´s astandard seven song set lasted some sixty five minutes. Clearly frustated, Dylan tells the hecklers, "Go to the bowling - hall until I´m finished!" When he returns with The Hawks for the second half the curtains open to revaeal a massive American flagg drapped across the back of the stage. the French press respond with predictable fury, The Fifaro`proclaiming ´The Fal of An IdoL` The concert is reorded, and is due for broadcast on French radio on the 29th May. However it is not broadcast. According to one source Dylan decided to veto it at the last minute."
