Review by Ron Ely

As someone pointed out in an earlier review, " The Levee's Gonna Break " is this band's signature. I never fully appreciated the song at the time it was captured in the studio, but at this moment it has fermented into a full-bodied elixir. Then Bob said, " Somebody wants to come up and sing a little song for ya. Tom Waits! " No cheers could be heard from the crowd, but up to the mic sauntered Tom - er, I mean, Stu - and damn if he didn't sound exactly like the San Diego Serenader!! I was expecting to see windshield vipers crawl off of George's drum kit....that Bob, what a joker! Later they tried to coax Willie Nelson out from the wings, but he was having none of it ( Charlie did play a couple nice Willie soundalike licks, though ). Then followed another TTL gold nugget, the scarcely-played " This Dream Of You " as my luck continued to roll.

Review by Michael
It was apparent from the first guitar chords of “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” that Dylan was totally “on” tonight. (Maybe stepping it up in response to his great opening acts?) I always expect the first three numbers to be marginal and dedicated to getting the soundboard mix right. Not tonight. It was cracking from start to finish, and Dylan’s voice was crystal clear throughout. Anybody who says Dylan’s voice is shot really needed to be at this show, because he was all over his vocal range, singing high and low octaves on alternating verses and holding notes for several beats on songs like “Don’t Think Twice… it’s alllllllllllllllriiiiiight” and a terrific rendition of “Tangled Up in Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue.”

And then there was Dylan... Tonight varied from rocking pieces, to slower more mellow tunes throughout. It seemed like the band just hit everything tonight, and once again, I found myself digging a few tunes that I normally don't care for all that much. The highlights were numerous for me, including "It Ain't Me, Babe", "Love Sick", "Rollin' & Tumblin'", "Spirit On The Water", "High Water (For Charlie Patton)", "Workingman's Blues #2", "My Back Pages", "Ain't Talkin'", "Ballad Of A Thin Man", and "Thunder On The Mountain". Damn... I almost named every song there was (I guess I left out six). The crowd was really into what was going on, and showed their proper love and respect... which the band of course gave back like a giant continous boomerang. I'm really glad I was there tonight.

Review by Ian Blackbrough
Close readers will remember that I once was one of a few (thousand) to hear Saved as an opening number at Birmnigham's NEC (1981). Excellent though that gig was, my 2nd favorite (after Forever Young which, I think, he played just for me at the NEC two months ago, so absolutely NO COMPLAINTS when it did not come out tonight), but my second favorite was a rare outing of the Lonesome Death of sweet Hattie Carroll at the NEC several years ago. So tonight, Hattie Carroll was another absolute delight which entirely made the evening, surrounded by many "I have never heard that song" comments, but it was great to hear it. This was not a Dylan SOLO as of old, just the singer and the acoustic guitar, but an upbeat, uptempo acoustic rendition which was faithfully performed. A real treat.
