Review by Joanie

I am still glowing from the show last night! After reading the set list from the 15th, I was jealous and a little disappointed thinking we would get a pretty standard show. NOT that I would have minded, I am happy to see Bob perform anything, anytime anywhere. In my heart of hearts I was hoping for Shelter from the storm, maybe Stuck inside of Mobile. I never dared hope for Visions of Johanna much less MR.Tambourine Man. He could have stopped after the second song and I would have gone home happy. WE knew from the opening that it was not to be same old, same old and it just got better. Lenny Bruce! I Don't Believe You!. I won't comment on the sound, arrangements or anything else because they don't matter. Just to see Bob perform these gems live made my year. Thanks Bob !! Please don't ever stop.

I don’t know if I were able to fully capture the power and grandeur of these opening shows. I do know that Friday night’s show was excellent, and Saturday night’ s show was phenomenal. I do know that I am happy to have heard 50% different material on the second night. I do know that I will not soon forget seeing Bob as he opened another leg of his Never Ending Tour. Thanks again, Bob, for giving us two unforgettable nights in Atlantic City by the cold gray sea. If you have any comments or just like to talk ‘Bob,’ get in touch with me??

Review by Howard Weiner

That miraculous devil of a song, Nettie Moore, ensued. Music is my religion and this is my favorite spiritual. Dylan botched some lyrics during the third and fourth stanzas, but just imagine if you had to remember all these words. He’s an amazing individual. Highway 61 was brutally brief. Bob; let’s put this one on the shelf with the pitchfork. I saw a version from Portland on 11-09-6 that rocked me down to the very marrow. The last three or four times I’ve seen 61, it’s been painfully short. Unleash the beasts, let the Cowboy Band jam!

Review by Adam Dean

The set was punctuated with religious themed songs (God Knows, Ring Them Bells, Tryin’ To Get To Heaven, I Believe In You, I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine) and the rest of the set fit in very nicely with this theme (except maybe Watchin’ The River Flow which always seems like a “throw away” song to me,. A chance for the band to play loud). Actually, that was my other impression from last night – THIS BAND IS LOUD!!!

Review by Don Principe

But this band, I don't know - Stu does nothing at all that perks up my ears, Denny makes some interesting note selections, and Donnie's pedal steel is fine, but this band lineup - at least last night - was nothing more than OK, to my ears. And again, Elana was MIA. As for Bob himself, it was the usual from recent years - crouched over the piano, barking out the words or relying on that up-note style to end lines, and taking occasional forays to the center of the stage during his harp solos. And if I hear TweedleD and TD one more time... I hate to sound unenthusiastic, but I'd gladly trade last night's whole show for a few songs by the Larry/Charlie or Larry/Freddy band. Naturally, this all nothing more than my own personal opinion, blah blah woof woof - if you were there, I hope you enjoyed it!

Review by Peter Ston Brown

Then came the first real highlight, "Trying To Get To Heaven." As with other recent versions, the song was back to the original melody and pretty much the original arrangement, except on the chorus, Dylan's phrasing was much closer to the more jazzy arrangement of a few years ago. There was also a lyric change (and I'm not even sure what verse) where he sang, "I tried to give you everything that you've been longing for."

Review by Hank Perlman
For this fan, it came down to something that happened during "Lay Lady Lay." Bob completely cracked himself up while singing the song and the rest of the band (minus Larry Campbell who was too focused on his playing) started laughing along with him. Exactly what they were laughing at is a mystery although the way Bob was singing the song seemed somewhat playful and he took some fun chances with the vocals that were pretty humorous and that seemed to make them all laugh more.

Review by Willy Gissen

One thing you can say about Bob Dylan. His concerts never go stale. There's always something new and different even beyond an ever-changing set list and evolving interpretations of his staple songs. Some observations about this event as opposed to the last tour: one) I didn't see the eye logo adorning the stage though this might have been because of the logistics of having the Waifs as the opening act. 2) Dylan has significantly improved on the keyboards. It still amazes me that he would learn a new instrument at this stage of his life. 3) Dylan has added a little dance that he used on more than one occasion. He would step out from behind the keyboards and do a little perambulation around the center of the stage, shaking his hands in little waving motions in time to the music.

Review by Steven Walter

Much as I loved the past two fall tours, I think Dylan's voice is at its strongest now since back in double-0. It's a wonder to hear and behold, though the beholding may give you a bit of whiplash as you swivel your head back and forth from Dylan to Koella & Campbell. Garnier at stage center: I guess that's what you get for sticking with the Big D. so long. It all pays off in the end! As for Mr. Koella, I hate to say it, but he gave me a real case of the Charlie-who's: I love the warm tone of his guitar and the way it contrasts with his spare, yet not-angular, style. He's stepping out for more solos than any Dylan guitarist could reasonably hope for this early in his tenure, another reason to be thankful for the Master's voluntary exile to his little side-stage Elba. On the encores, too, he shone; but, for the last time, note to sound people: main set = plenty loud. Encore = ear-puncturing. For the love of Zeus, leave it where it is.

Review by Peter John Pruski

The first set had 15 songs, whereas the second had one more encore (after a brief threat from the Fire Marshall to clear the aisles or cancel the encores), and thus 16 total songs. Songs 5-7 (TUIB, Soldier's Grave & Country Pie) and encores 1 & 2 (Things Have Changed & Dogs) were present in both shows, so thus by my count we got 31 performances of 26 different songs from about 7PM to just before midnight. Wow! The (whole?) PA went out and the band was playing only with their small stacks and monitors during most of Back Pages & Ma in the second show. Bob just kept playing and singing (largely inaudibly from my seats) through it however, just like he did during the sound-challenged Desolation Row at Columbia this Summer. Tony was cracking up and talking to Bob throughout parts of this disturbance, and man did the audience come alive during the PA problems and the fixing thereof, which seemed to take at least 5 or more minutes. Oh well, so this AC show is perhaps unique too!

Review by Peter Stone Brown
Sometimes it seems there are nights when Bob Dylan decides he's going to out and show everyone exactly why he is. well. Bob Dylan and the first show at the Tropicana was one of those times. Dylan was *on* from the first note of "Duncan & Brady," followed by an astoundingly beautiful "To Ramona" with Larry Campbell on mandolin, and then, a "Desolation Row" that rocked with Dylan finding what he was looking for on guitar and not letting it go in two different solos that kept building in intensity. But it was the singing that made the show. There were times when he was sailing and it didn't matter that the set list wasn't all that exciting, even standard compared to some shows on this tour because he made both "Don't Think Twice" and the ever-present "Tangled Up In Blue" come alive.

And then out came the electrics and into a blues riff and both Kevin and I wrote down “Tombstone Blues,” but it was “Maggie’s Farm.” But playing around with intros weren’t the only tricks Dylan had up his sleeve, the next song was a total surprise, “The Man In Me.” And it was just a gorgeous version, particularly the bridge which he did twice, changing the line from the original to “From my toes right up to my hair.” On the rest of the song, Dylan echoed each line he sang with a guitar line, almost like a blues singer, though this isn’t exactly a blues song. And then came a killer rendition of “Tombstone Blues,” with Charlie Sexton stepping out on lead guitar.

Show Info by Bob Boots

Bob and the band performed two shows at the Copa Room. The early show was at 8:00 pm, and the late one was at 11:00 pm. This two disc set presents each show on a separate disc. Not Fade Away, the final song performed at both shows; is not included. The first show is all acoustic. The only electric number performed at this show was the final, excluded Not Fade Away. An inebriated woman walked on stage and started to sing during this song. When security didn't remove her, 30 or 40 more fans from the front got up on stage. Security took Bob away and the song ended early. A few highlights from the two shows include Stone Walls And Steel Bars which has a great sounding bluegrass feel with beautiful harmonies; a breathtaking Masters Of War, a church sing along styled Rock Of Ages, and a perfectly performed Make You Feel My Love.

I was fortunate enough to go to both shows, and I will start by reviewing the late show--It was the stuff of Legends. Bob & Co came out rockin with "To Be Alone With You". The set went into the stratasphere with an electric "She Belongs To Me". "It Aint Me Babe", the surprise acoustic opener, was the best I've heard since Rolling Thunder. He treated it with the respect he usually reserves for (b)obscure cover versions! And "Not Fade Away" was just insane. As the songs started, about a half-dozen sexy babes from the audience shimmed from both sides of the stage to surround Poker-faced Bob. Next thing you know, the stage was covered with about 100 fans all dancing to the jungle beat! One young guy even lifted up his shirt: he wrote "SOY BOMB" on his torso. It was incredible!

The early show had Bob mugging & dancing. I think at the time the crowd was hoping for rare songs, but got a loose & funky show. In retrospect the looseness of the band, and the intimacy of the club, was what made the show. You could tell Bob was having a great time. And so did we. It was like a party. We were all lucky to have been there.

Til' I Fell In Love With You was the first one out of the box and it was superb. I'm not sure if it was as good as the one at the Trocadero in Philly in December but certainly enjoyable. Next was a great reading of It Aint Me Babe, Acoustic and crystal clear, it proved to, and reminded me of how great of song it is. The third encore, Lovesick, in my opinion the best tune of the night. Quite frankly, they nailed it. Sung and played to perfection, it was mesmerizing. As always, the lights went up as they launched into a joyous Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35, and finally everyone stood and danced as a jubilant party erupted amongst the crowd. All in all a fabulous show and hope to see you in Delaware.
