Ein Jahr nach erscheinen der Platte sagte Dylan, er könne sich nicht vorstellen, jemals ein besseres Album als   Highway 61 Revisited zu machen.  Im Sommer`65 hatte Dylan alle Puristen beim Newport Folk Festival vor dem Kopf gestossen, als er die Butterfield Blues Band als Backing Band engagierte, und Butterfield´s Lead - Gitarrist  Mike Bloomfield war auch bei den entspannten ( aber inspirierten ) Live- im Studio - Session zu Highway 61 Revisited dabei - einem Album, das zusammen mit dem nachfolgenden Blonde on Blonde  die Rockmusik revolutioniert hat. Die Vorstellung, Rock könne als Vehikel für Texte mit literarischem Anspruch dienen, war damals völlig neu. Niemand jedoch  konnte mit Worten so atemberaubend gut umgehen wie Dylan in dieser Periode. Dabei ist Dylan´s Bildersprache mit ihren surrealen Gegenüberstellungen oft ungeheuer komisch - Highway 61  ist im Grunde ein grossartiges comedy album. Boshafte Komik in   Like a Rolling Stone Slapstick - Humor auf  Tombstone Blues  beissender Spott in dem Titelstück und selbst das düstere Desolation Row  hat durchaus seine amüsanten Seiten.
